(Huntington and Ona, WV) The Cabell Midland High School sports medicine staff has received the 2018 Safe Sports School Award - 1st Team Honor from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA).

The award, based on last year’s performance, recognizes programs that:

  • create a positive athletic health care administrative system
  • provide or coordinate pre-participation physical examinations
  • promote safe and appropriate practice and competition facilities
  • plan for selection, fit function and proper maintenance of athletic equipment
  • provide a permanent, appropriately equipped area to evaluate and treat injured athletes
  • develop injury and illness prevention strategies, including protocols for environmental conditions
  • provide or facilitate injury intervention
  • create and rehearse venue-specific Emergency Action Plan
  • provide or facilitate psychosocial consultation and nutritional counseling/education
  • be sure athletes and parents are educated of the potential benefits and risks in sports as well as their responsibilities.

The school’s designated certified athletic trainers from Marshall Sports Medicine Institute—Andrew DeMoss, Erin Wingate and formerly Nick Dailey—each played a role in meeting and enforcing NATA’s high standards for player safety.

“This award is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our athletic trainers who are first and foremost on the field to ensure the safety of our student athletes,” said Tom Belmaggio, coordinator of athletic training services at Marshall Sports Medicine Institute. “In addition to all the staff at the Marshall Sports Medicine Institute, we would like to thank the West Virginia Athletic Trainers Association and Cabell County school system for their support.”

The Marshall Sports Medicine Institute, a collaboration between Cabell Huntington Hospital, Marshall Athletics and Marshall Health, provides a multidisciplinary sports medicine approach to athletes as well as the active and health-conscious population.
